Mind-blowing fight scene generates buzz for upcoming action movie already compared to John Wick

Action cinema is alive and well, with franchises like John Wick, Mission: Impossible, and Extraction continuing to raise the bar for what audiences thought possible to present on screen. The genre isn’t all about recognizable properties though, and there’s plenty of room for new titles to demand our attention with an electrifying entrance. In the case of Monkey Man, everything about it promises one of the must-see movies of the year.

What is Monkey Man about?

Dev Patel is known for roles in such movies as Slumdog Millionaire and The Green Knight, but for Monkey Man, he’s turning his talents to directing in his feature debut.

Not only is he directing this action thriller, but he also devised the story while boasting co-producer and co-writer credits. And if that wasn’t enough, he stars in the central role of Kid, a young man who’s battling it out in an underground fight club for a living.

Training to become a lethal weapon, it’s time for him to seek revenge against corrupt leaders who orchestrated the killing of his mother.

Rising up to avenge her and take a stand for the powerless in the city, a trail of violence ensues.

Monkey Man kitchen fight scene earns buzz

Universal Pictures has recently released a clip of the movie’s kitchen fight scene, which shows Kid taking on a group of assailants.

The camera swoops and soars, compelling audiences to draw parallels to Keanu Reeves‘ iconic hitman series. “We got a better John Wick boys,” one argued.

“So ready for this movie I can’t wait,” another added. “The choreography looks sick.” Watching it myself, I was reminded of the incredible 2011 martial arts action movie The Raid, and others have felt echoes of that film’s choreography here too.

“That would be really cool if this movie connected to the John Wick movies,” somebody also suggested.

Monkey Man movie release date

The Monkey Man release date is set for Friday, April 5th 2024.

Ahead of that, it had its world premiere at South by Southwest festival on Monday, March 11th. So far, it has received generally favorable reviews.

Co-produced by Jordan Peele (Get Out, Nope), there’s every reason to go and see this when it hits theaters.
