Airbnb has completely banned hosts from installing indoor security cameras, ending a previous policy allowing surveillance in living rooms, hallways and other shared spaces.

Until now, hosts could set up cameras in their homes as long as they were clearly visible and the visitor was informed before booking, however from April 30 onwards, only outdoor cameras will be permitted, according to a new policy announced in March.

Airbnb will, however, continue to allow sound level meters, devices designed to help recognize if a guest has staged a party, which is generally prohibited. Guests must also be informed of the presence of such devices in advance.

Airbnb says that its tightening of rules is likely to affect only a small proportion of listed accommodations. Reports had previously emerged of Airbnb guests being surprised to discover security cameras in their accommodation.

In the event of violations after April 30, accommodation or host accounts can be removed from the platform. In hotels that offer their rooms via Airbnb, cameras remain permitted in lobbies, corridors and restaurants.
