Celta Vigo part company with Rafa Benitez

The relegation-threatened Celta Vigo have parted ways with coach Rafa Benitez after just eight months in charge, the LaLiga side said on Tuesday.

The 63-year-old had worked with "absolute dedication and full commitment" but the team had "not achieved the results expected," a statement from the north-western Spanish club added.

Reserve team coach Claudio Giráldez will take over for this Sunday's clash at Sevilla.

After the 4-0 defeat at league leaders Real Madrid at the weekend, Celta Vigo are 17th out of 20 in the Spanish top flight with 24 points and five wins from 28 games. This puts them just two points clear of the relegation places.

Benitez is one of Spain's best-known coaches having managed Valencia, Liverpool, Inter Milan, Chelsea, Napoli and Real Madrid among others. He only signed a three-year contract in Vigo last year.
