Spurs must decide by mid-June on permanent Werner signing, report

Tottenham Hotspur must decide by mid-June whether to make use of a purchase option for Germany forward Timo Werner, the Bild paper reported on Thursday.

Werner joined the Premier League club in January from RB Leipzig on loan for the rest of the season, with the option for Spurs to make the move permanent.

Bild said that Spurs must decide by June 14. If they decide to keep him they will have to pay a transfer fee of €17 million ($18.6 million), according to dpa sources.

Werner, 28, has featured in seven games for Spurs with two assists and a goal in each of the last two matches, which is better than he managed in the entire first part of the season in Leipzig where he did not have regular playing time.

Leipzig coach Marco Rose said on Thursday that "we are not in contact but I am following his development.

"He is starting to score again which is a result of feeling good. He should continue to ride this wave. He is officially one of our players but of course Tottenham have the option top sign him permanently," Rose said.

Werner decided on a return to England to have more playing time and a chance to return into the national team for the Euro 2024 home tournament.

Werner played at Leipzig 2016-2020 and then joined Chelsea for €53 million. He returned to Leipzig in 2022 for €20 million.
