Saturday, June 8, 2024

The first part is the Noh play "Tamai" performed by Kazuhide Hosho, headmaster of the Hosho school. When Hikohohodemi no Mikoto heads to the sea capital in search of the fishhook he borrowed from his brother, he meets Toyotamahime and Tamayorihime, the daughters of the sea god. The princesses show Takashi to his father and promise to help him find the fishhook. Takashi makes a vow with Princess Toyotama and becomes the god of the sea, but after three years, he returns to his country. The princesses find jewels, the sea god finds a fishhook, offers them, dances, and sends Takashi off to return to the Ryugu. The piece, which has not been performed in the Hosho school for hundreds of years, will be revived in July 2023 based on materials from the Edo period. This is a gorgeous stage production based on the myth of ``Umisachi Yamasachi.'' The second part is Noh "Kagodaiko" by Takashi Takeda. Seki Seiji, a servant of a certain Matsuura, was in prison because he had murdered his rival, but he broke the prison and escaped. Kiyotsugu's wife is thrown into prison instead, but when asked where her husband is going, she does not answer. The wife beats the prison drum and dances madly because she misses her husband, but a certain person sees this and decides to help both husband and wife, and the wife comes back to her senses and searches for her husband, who was hiding, and they live happily ever after. . Although the main theme is a man who goes crazy due to his love for her, the play depicts a strong-hearted woman who tries to protect her husband, and the play progresses in the style of a dialogue drama with many slow and fast paced scenes. Kyogen is ``Funafune'' and ``Onigawara'' by the Yamamoto Tojiro family of the Okura school. There is a performance explanation at the beginning of each part.
