35-year-old rested, Finn Azaz returns: Predicted Middlesbrough XI v Blackburn - opinion

Middlesbrough will be looking to make it four straight wins on Saturday afternoon.

Michael Carrick‘s side are in an impressive run of form, following their 1-0 win away at Birmingham City on Tuesday night.

That moved ‘Boro to 9th in the Championship table, five points adrift of the play-off places as things stand.

Next up for Middlesbrough this weekend, is the visit of Blackburn Rovers to the Riverside Stadium.

The visitors are in poor form, having won just two of their last 19 Championship matches. That has seen them drop to 18th in the standings, just three points clear of the relegation zone.

As a result, this could be a big opportunity for ‘Boro to continue their recent good run of form.

Latest Middlesbrough team news

Speaking ahead of this game, Carrick confirmed he has the same group of players to pick from as he did in midweek.

However, he is hopeful that he could soon have more options to choose from, with the international break to come after this weekend’s games.

Dael Fry, Hayden Hackney, Alex Bangura and Josh Coburn could all be back in action for Middlesbrough, when they return to action against Southampton on 29th March.

Darragh Lenihan and Tommy Smith though, have long since been ruled out for the rest of the season.

How could Michael Carrick line up vs Blackburn Rovers

Having named an unchanged in the last three games, Carrick will have to decide if he wants the same 11 players to do that again here.

Seny Dieng should start in goal, having firmly established himself as first choice between the posts this season.

The switch to a back three has worked for Middlesbrough in these last three games. With Lenihan and Fry out, Paddy McNair, Rav van den Berg and Matt Clarke should once again take up those positions.

Luke Ayling and Lukas Engel have both performed in the wing-back position, so should keep those roles here.

Jonny Howson’s return to action at the start of this run was unexpected. The 35-year-old may therefore be due a rest, which could see Finn Azaz, fresh from his international call-up, come into midfield.

The 23-year-old would then likely partner Nottingham Forest loanee Lewis O’Brien in the centre of the park.

Following his stunning winner for Middlesbrough on Tuesday, Riley McGree looks a good bet to start in the number ten role again here.

Having led the line well recently, Emmanuel Latte Lath and Marcus Forss should keep their places as ‘Boro’s centre forward starters in this one.

Here is how we think Middlesbrough will line up against Blackburn Rovers:
