'Something to look out for': 59-year-old Premier League winner could replace Howe at Newcastle - journalist

Eddie Howe seems to be under a touch of pressure at Newcastle United at the moment, with inconsistent form blighting their season.

Howe has watched on as injuries have ravaged his Newcastle squad this season. The Mags are down in 10th right now, and having gone out of the FA Cup against Man City yesterday, this season is a far cry from last term’s effort.

Of course, that’s led to rumours starting that PIF might look to replace Howe in the summer. And one man who could well be in the mix is former Man City boss, Roberto Mancini.

Roberto Mancini could replace Eddie Howe at Newcastle

Speaking about the potential issue for GiveMeSport, journalist Dean Jones has said that Mancini is one to keep an eye on, especially due to his links to Saudi.

“Mancini does seem to fit the bill if Newcastle are going to make a change this summer. At the moment, Howe still has a chance to keep his job, but it would not be a surprise if the owners look for something else next season because they want to win stuff at the end of the day. Trophies are important, and Champions League football is vital to how they see the coming seasons. Is Howe the man who can deliver?,” Jones said.

“Mancini has a great track record for delivering big moments, and because of his Saudi connections, there is an obvious tie-in here. It’s just something to look out for at this stage, but it is a picture that can change quickly. Mancini has won loads of trophies as a player and manager – and he’s not finished yet.”

Risky decision for Newcastle

There is always going to be a point that Newcastle get to where Eddie Howe leaves. The big question really is where do the owners see that point.

As it stands, it would be harsh for Howe to be sacked. Yes, performances aren’t quite as good but injuries and the situation with Sandro Tonali have hardly helped his cause.

Last season also felt like Newcastle went five steps forward and arguably did so too quickly. With them now struggling a touch, it’s magnified because of how good last year was.

Howe would, you think, be gutted to lose his job. Mancini, of course, is a proven winner and has done it in England in similar circumstances at Man City.

The Italian would certainly be an interesting appointment, given the age difference and different methods he’d employ to Howe.
