Swiss skier Lara Gut-Behrami won the women's World Cup overall title and the giant slalom crystal globe on Sunday despite big rival Federica Brignone of Italy taking first place in the race in Saalbach-Hinterglemm.

The last giant slalom of the season in Austria had given Gut-Behrami the chance of securing her first discipline and second World Cup title and she managed enough points by finishing 10th.

Brignone, the 2020 World Cup champion, won the race - despite almost falling early on in her second run - by 1.36 seconds from New Zealand's Alice Robinson, but it was not enough given the tactical performance of 2016 champion Gut-Behrami.

"It means a lot to me, everything has always been about the giant slalom for me. When I knew I was doing well there, I could also do well in the other disciplines," Gut-Behrami said.

"I longed to be able to compete in the giant slalom at some point."

The 32-year-old won four giant slaloms this season, one downhill and three super-gs.

American great Mikaela Shiffrin finished her season on Saturday by winning the last slalom of 2023-24.

The five-time World Cup champion led the standings before being injured in a fall in the Cortina downhill in January, which forced her to miss several races and skip the quicker events in Saalbach-Hinterglemm.

The women's World Cup finals conclude with a super-G on Friday and downhill on Saturday.

The men's overall World Cup title had already been won by Swiss star Marco Odermatt and the slalom standings by Austrian Manuel Feller, who hoped he could treat his home crowd to another individual victory.

But Feller was second in Sunday's final slalom of the season after Norway's Timon Haugan, who led after the first run, edged him out by 0.40 seconds for his first World Cup success. Germany's Linus Strasser finished third in the race and second in the discipline standings.

The men's season finishes off with a super-G on Friday and a downhill on Sunday in Saalbach.
