After days of negotiations, the German industrial union IG Metall and five companies in the supplier park at Ford in the western town of Saarlouis have reached a negotiation outcome.

"We have concluded agreements with the five plants," Ralf Cavelius, lead negotiator for the local branch of union, told dpa on Sunday evening.

"And for all of them, we have achieved a result that is commendable and significantly stands out from normal social plan issues," he said.

On Monday, there will be employee meetings in the individual companies where votes will be cast on accepting the collective bargaining agreements. There will also be a ballot on whether to end the strike, Cavelius said.

Last Friday, the union called on about 500 employees at the plants to go on indefinite strike. After four days of industrial action, a strike moratorium was taken in order to re-negotiate.

"We actually wanted jobs, but we're not getting them," said Cavelius. "So we want the second-best solution. That's a lot of money."

There are severance payments, transfer companies and transitional arrangements for older employees. "We have asked for much more. But we have clearly reached our goal," he said.

The reason for the agreements is the end of production in Saarlouis, a town on the French border, which was announced by US car manufacturer Ford in November 2025.

A social collective agreement has been in place for employees at the Ford plant since the end of February.

The agreements include the continued employment of 1,000 of the total of 3,750 Ford employees until the end of 2032, high severance payments and bonuses, the formation of a transfer company and re-qualification programmes.

In addition, the end of production of the Ford Focus has been postponed by six months until November 2025.
