'You can see': Emile Heskey claims £50m Chelsea player's performances have got worse this season

Chelsea managed to squeeze their way past Leicester City yesterday in the FA Cup to book another trip to Wembley.

Mauricio Pochettino’s side had given a two goal lead away before Carney Chukwuemeka and Noni Madueke netted late on to seal a 4-2 win.

For Chelsea’s youngsters, it was redemption for what has been a poor season on the whole. However, their performance was not helped by experienced £50m signing Raheem Sterling, who had a stinker of a game before being taken off.

Raheem Sterling continues to struggle for Chelsea

Sterling has found this season a struggle for the Blues despite a decent enough start. The England man played 90 minutes in five of the opening six Premier League games, scoring twice and looking like one of the key elder statesmen for Chelsea.

However, since then, he’s had a bit of a dip in form. Indeed, Sterling last completed 90 minutes in the league back in January and he’s scored just the one goal in his last 12 in the PL.

With the England squad for the Euros now looking like a distant dream for Sterling, he really needs a superb finish to the season to get in Gareth Southgate’s thinking.

Down to Sterling to ‘step up’

Speaking on Stadium Astro about Sterling’s form, Emile Heskey believes that the former Liverpool man has actually got worse as the season’s gone on.

“Beginning part of the season he was actually playing really well. He was one of the most consistent players in the Premier League. But now you can see he’s had a bit of a dip and the thing is when you’re at the big clubs everyone notices it. When you’re at the smaller clubs it’s not so evident,” Heskey said.

“Now, he’s got to really step up. We know he’s capable of it cos he’s one of the best wingers in the league. Now though, all eyes are on him. So he’s got the ability but he’s got to figure out how do I turn this around? There’s talk of the national team and not being selected but he has got the ability to get back in that national team and he’s got to figure it out.”

Sterling will be well aware his place in the England squad is pretty much gone now. In fact, it’s likely to be taken by his teammate Cole Palmer in all honesty.
