Prime Video is streaming 1980s classic everyone must watch ahead of Jake Gyllenhaal's remake release

Remake. It doesn’t have to be a dirty word, does it? They tend to get a pretty terrible reputation, and I’ll be the last person to deny that there haven’t been some valid reasons for that, here and there. However, there have been some great ones, whether that’s William Friedkin’s Sorcerer reimagining The Wages Of Fear or the Coen Brothers’ True Grit breathing new life into the timeless John Wayne western. Sometimes it’s too easy to judge a remake if the original is a distant memory, so why not stream the original Road House before the latest?

Patrick Swayze’s Road House on Prime Video

In between the absolute sensation that was Dirty Dancing in 1987 and the supernatural romance Ghost in 1990, American actor and heartthrob Patrick Swayze kicked ass in Road House, the incredible 1989 action movie.

Directed by Rowdy Herrington, it remains one of the most nostalgic and iconic efforts of its genre from that era. Patrick stars as James Dalton, a bouncer who takes a gig at a refurbished roadside bar in Missouri.

When the bar becomes targeted by a corrupt businessman, it’s time for Dalton to take out the trash and show a string of hardmen what he’s made of.

Sure, the movie’s dated, but it’s arguably become more charming over time, never mind having lost any of its charm. It’s an endlessly charismatic central performance, and you can see it streaming as part of your Amazon Prime Video subscription now. With the remake fast approaching, you’d better get on it.

Jake Gyllenhaal Road House remake release date

The 2024 remake of Road House is premiering exclusively on Prime Video on Thursday, March 21st 2024.

Jake Gyllenhaal is taking over as Dalton, but this time he’s a former UFC middleweight fighter, giving the classic story a more modern update. He’s working as a bouncer in the Florida Keys, and just like the original, he has some trouble on his hands.

Adding even more reasons to see this exciting new take, it’s directed by the fantastic Doug
Liman, who has previously helmed Edge Of Tomorrow, Mr. & Mrs. Smith, The Bourne Identity, and American Made.

As well as that, Jake is joined in the latest cast by the likes of MMA and boxing icon Conor McGregor, musical powerhouse Post Malone, and more.

I was feeling seriously skeptical when I first heard of the remake, but with Jake being one of my all-time favorite actors I predicted he’d be able to do something interesting with the project. It looks like the latest take is its own beast while paying a nice homage to the classic that came before it. My Thursday night double-bill is locked in.

Road House (1989) now streaming on Amazon Prime Video.
