More than 80 arrests in Marseille anti-drug raids

More than 80 people have been arrested in a large-scale police operation aimed at Marseille-based drug traffickers.

Similar raids will be conducted in other French cities in the coming weeks, President Emmanuel Macron announced in Marseille on Tuesday.

Since Monday, a total of 82 arrests have been made in the southern French coastal city and 60 people have been taken into police custody.

Drug gangs dominate entire neighbourhoods in France's second largest city and there is frequent violence between rival gangs, with innocent people sometimes getting caught up in attacks.

Last year, 49 people died in Marseille in drug-related clashes, significantly more than in previous years. The suspected leader of one of the rival gangs was arrested earlier this month.
