Manchester United player ratings for the season so far: Garnacho and Mainoo shine but there's one 2/10

It’s been a disappointing season so far for Manchester United.

Erik ten Hag has been unable to build upon the progress he made in his first season in charge, with Manchester United largely regressing as a result.

Injuries have been a massive issue throughout the campaign, though, and there have at least been some signs of improvement in 2024.

Here are how the 26 players currently at United and who have made at least one appearance have rated so far in the campaign.

Goalkeepers

Andre Onana – 6.5

Onana endured a rough start to life at United as he replaced David de Gea. His lauded ability in possession didn’t come to pass immediately and there were several high-profile mistakes.

However, he has found his footing since the turn of the year and is in great form currently. The Cameroonian has made a string of fine stops and is coping well considering how many shots he has to face.

Altay Bayindir – 4

Has played just one game so far and conceded two to Stockport County.

Defenders

Lisandrto Martinez – 4

Lisandro Martinez’ rating is low but it’s hardly his fault. After missing the latter stages of last season, the Argentine has suffered two more injuries which have kept him out of action for months.

United have really missed him but, thankfully, he’s now back on the mend.

Diogo Dalot – 6

In what will be a growing trend, Diogo Dalot also started the season poorly but has grown in confidence in 2024. He has flourished with a guranteed spot in the team and is making big improvements to the defensive side of his game. Keep it up.

Luke Shaw – 5

Like Martinez, Luke Shaw’s season has been ravaged by injuries and he has only managed to play 15 games. He has looked good when available, and he’s crucial to the team, but he hasn’t been available enough.

Raphael Varane – 6

Given his record, Raphael Varane has surprisingly remained injury-free for the most part this season but has struggled for form at points. The Frenchman found himself out of the team at the end of 2023 but has regained his place and offers a composed, elegent pressence at the back.

Harry Maguire – 7

It didn’t look like Harry Maguire had a future at United when he was stripped of the captaincy in the summer but it transpires the removed weight has helped him soar.

The cente-back has been United’s best defender this season, having largely cut out the silly mistakes from his game, and has been commanding in both boxes.

Aaron Wan-Bissaka – 6

Aaron Wan-Bissaka made his first start since November on Sunday and immediately showed what United have been missing. He kept Mohamed Salah quiet on his weaker side and picked up where he left off before his injury. A player who has improved considerably under Ten Hag.

Victor Lindelof – 5

A fairly regular pressence at the back and his versatility has been useful amid a defensive injury crisis. Still makes too many rookie positional errors, though.

Willy Kambwala – 5

Is yet to put a foot wrong in his six appearances but not had much chance to impress yet either.

Jonny Evans – 6.5

Given United brought Jonny Evans back as a precaution in case they needed some cover, the Northern Irishman has done so well in his higher than expected game time. The 36-year-old has played 24 matches and has not looked out of place despite his aging years.

Midfielders

Bruno Fernandes – 6

Bruno Fernandes himseld admits he’s not been at his best this season, even if he still has contributed 17 goals and assists.

The playmaker has not been able to have as much attacking influence as he should for someone in his position but his commitment and leadership qualities can not be questioned. Even if he gets a bit snarky on the pitch from time-to-time.

Mason Mount – 3

A big disapointment so far. United spent £60m to sign Mason Mount but he’s managed just 13 appearances. The price particularly stings given they could have signed him for nothing this summer instead.

Injury has sidelined the midfielder for months but even before when he was playing he made little impact. It needs to change.

Kobbie Mainoo – 8

The breakout star of the season. For someone so young to play with such composure, guille and grace is remarkable. Kobbie Mainoo has deservedly earned an England call up and he looks set to dominate midfield for club and country for years to come.

Scott McTominay – 7

Scott McTominay is such a strange player to rate. On one hand, he’s been scoring crucial goals and delivers big moments when needed most. On the other, his general play brings United down in midfield as he isn’t great at keeping hold of the ball.

Yet, it’s hard to argue with his nine goals this season which make him the second highest goal-scorer.

Casemiro – 5

A significant drop in form from Casemiro’s excellent first season. Ten Hag’s midfield set up has done him no favours but it seems the miles on the tank have suddenly caught up with the Brazilian. Still capable of classy moments but his best days look behind him and mistakes are now littering his game.

Sofyan Amrabat – 2

Fans were excited when Sofyan Amrabat was recruited as it was thought he would add steel and passing class the midfield lacked. He’s been a colosall disappointment.

The Morrocan has looked miles out of his depth whenever on the pitch and been immediately shown up by Mainoo. It’s impossible to see his loan being made permanent.

Christian Eriksen – 4

Like Casemiro, age looks to be accelerating Christian Eriksen’s decline. The Dane no longer has the staminia to operate on the highest level for 60 minutes, let alone 90. He hasn’t contributed much this season.

Forwards

Rasmus Hojlund – 7

Rasmus Hojlund is another summer signing who had a slow start, with the striker failing to score a Premier League goal in his first 14 games.

The floodgates opened after his first, though, as he scored seven in his last six. Injuries have disrupted his momentum but United’s form fell off without him. Hojlund has made himself crucial to the side.

Marcus Rashford – 6

Like many, Marcus Rashford’s levels have dropped this term. The forward came off a career-best 30 goals last season but has just eight so far this time around.

Off the field controvesey and being forced to play in the middle hasn’t helped but there have been promising signs in recent weeks after being moved back to his favoured left flank.

Alejandro Garnacho – 8

United’s player of the season so far alongside Mainoo. Alejandro Garnacho has now firmly established himself as a regular starter and is delivering with consistently dangerous displays.

The Argentine could have more than his seven goals if he was more clinical but he’s improving all the time and is so exciting to watch.

Antony – 3

If it wasn’t for his equaliser against Liverpool this rating would be even lower. It was a fine goal on Sunday ad hopefully Antony can build on it but he had done absolutely nothing of note before hand.

Amad Diallo – 5

Amad Diallo has had to wait patiently for his opportunities but has looked bright when given brief cameos. When given a significant chance against Liverpool, he took it by scoring the dramatic winner. Hopefully there will be more to come.

Anthony Martial – 3

It’s quite easy to forget that Anthony Martial is actually still a United player. The forward hasn’t played since December and scored just twice before that. With his contract set to expire in the summer, his time at Old Trafford may end with hardly a whimper.

Omari Forson – 4

Looked out of his depth on his full Premier League debut at Fulham but another exciting prospect.
