Stylish new SUV is first to ride on BMW's New Class platform

After three years of talking about little else but the upcoming New Class model range, BMW's next generation of vehicles is primed to appear in 2025. Images of a near-production SUV confirm a new visual direction. BMW AG/dpa

BMW's much-heralded Neue Klasse ("New Class") models, are set to dispense with the brash front grille now common throughout the range.

The Neue Klasse platform is specifically for EVs and it integrates batteries into the vehicle's structure. The packs range from 75 to 150 kilowatt-hours, with the drivetrain supporting 800-volt packs and fast charging at up to 270 kilowatts.

When plugged in, the Neue Klasse will be able to add 300 kilometres of range every 10 minutes.

The models using the new architecture have cylindrical battery cells that BMW is developing itself. These six-generation batteries offer 30% more energy in the same footprint as the current cells.

The near-production version shown by the German maker is certainly different from anything the brand has produced in a long time, with crisp lines, a narrower trademark grille and chiselled shape.

Just like the limousine shown at last September's IAA show in Munich, it moves away from the controversial in-your-face grille treatment of current editions by using more subtle LEDs up-front.

Inside, there's a new take on the maker's iDrive infotainment system, including a Panoramic Vision head-up display fascia spanning the windscreen.

The number of physical buttons for the driver is also somewhat reduced, in contrast to other makers such as Volkswagen who are replacing digital controls following negative customer feedback.
