Report: Syrian man dies after Israeli airstrike hits car in Lebanon

A Syrian man died of injuries sustained in an Israeli airstrike that had targeted a car in Lebanon on Sunday, Lebanese media reported.

A Syrian worker lost his hands and legs when the car he was driving was hit by an airstrike in the town of Souairi in the West Bekka region, Lebanon’s state news agency NNA said.

The man, who was delivering groceries for a supermarket for which he worked, died later, according to NNA.

The strike was carried out by an Israeli drone, reported broadcaster al-Manar TV, linked to the Lebanese Iran-aligned Lebanese Hezbollah movement. The Lebanese TV al-Jadeed News TV aired footage showing what it said was wreckage of the vehicle.

An Israeli military spokesman told dpa that the reports were being investigated.

There has been an uptick in confrontations between Hezbollah and Israeli forces on the border between Israel and Lebanon since the start of the Gaza war in October last year, leading to casualties on both sides.

It is the most serious escalation since the Second Lebanon War in 2006 between Israel and the Iran-backed Hezbollah movement.

In early January, the second highest-ranking Hamas leader abroad, Saleh al-Aruri, was killed in an explosion in the Lebanese capital Beirut. The Hezbollah militia in Lebanon, which is allied with Hamas, suspects that Israel was behind the attack. Several Hezbollah commanders were also targeted and killed.
