Lisandro Martinez leaves Argentina squad early as assessment made on his days training in USA

Manchester United are hoping to welcome Lisandro Martinez back into the squad after the international break.

This has not been the season Lisandro Martinez envisioned, after he had to undergo an operation just one month into the campaign. Then after his return in January, he suffered a MCL injury in just his second start of 2024.

There were a few eyebrows raised early this month whenMartinez was called up into the Argentina international squad.

He has spent the past few days in the USA, training ahead of their 3-0 win over El Salvador in Philadelphia, in which Alejandro Garnacho played a starring role.

Lisandro Martinez leaves Argentina squad

The Argentina squad is headed from America’s east coast to west coast for their friendly with Costa Rica on Wednesday morning at 2.50am UK time.

TyC Sports reports a decision has been made for Lisandro Martinez to leave the squad. Rather than travel further away from his club, he is now heading back to Manchester.

An assessment has been made that Argentina’s coaching staff are happy with Martinez’s progress and how he has operated in training sessions last week.

The report states: “The defender completed a week of good training, most of them on par with the group, and will return to the city of Manchester, England, to continue with the last part of the recovery from an injury that he has been carrying since the beginning of February.”

He will now return to Carrington to continue his rehabilitation from injury and be assessed by Manchester United’s coaching staff.

Alejandro Garnacho remains with the Argentina squad ahead of the midweek friendly. He has been earning praise from his teammates.

Lisandro Martinez will be assessed at Manchester United

Spending time with his Argentina colleagues will have been good for Martinez’s spirits.

Now he will be assessed back at Manchester United, ahead of Saturday’s upcoming game away at Brentford.

This match had previously been pencilled in as a possible return for Martinez, but he will have to prove his fitness.

United also have injury situations to assess over Harry Maguire, who returned early from England duty after picking up an injury, and Jonny Evans, who was not called up to Northern Ireland due to an ongoing issue.
