Report: Newcastle now leading the race to sign ‘special’ Juventus defender this summer

Newcastle United are now one of the favourites to sign a Juventus defender who has been impressing out on loan this season.

It’s going to be a very busy window for Newcastle who are wanting to add a number of players to their squad despite a limited budget.

A new report from De Telegraaf now claims that Newcastle sit alongside Borussia Dortmund as the two clubs now leading the race to sign the defender before the new season begins.

Newcastle want to add ‘special’ defender to their ranks

The news that Sven Botman will be out for possibly the next nine months with an ACL injury that he suffered against Man City has delivered a huge blow to Newcastle’s hopes for the new season.

The Magpies had been planning on looking for a new centre-back option anyway, but this has accelerated that process and is looking like it is now an absolute priority for the summer window.

Newcastle were first linked with ‘special‘ Juventus defender Dean Huijsen months ago but nothing ever came of their interest, though the urgent need to bring one in has reignited their monitoring of the Spanish youth international.

Huijsen has been on loan at Roma for these last few months where he has been key in their push back up the Serie a table after the sacking of Jose Mourinho as manager.

What Huijsen could bring to Newcastle

At just 18-years-old, Huijsen still has his very best years ahead of him, but he’s already shown a lot of talent in the early stages of his career and could be looking to make a move for more regular first-team football.

What Eddie Howe will really love is how hard the teenager works off the ball tracking runners and putting in challenges to win the ball back in his area, something he instils in every Newcastle player.

The biggest weakness of his game is perhaps his strength which for a defender is key, but Newcastle would be able to work on that over the summer and during pre-season.

Whether Juventus would be willing to part ways with the young centre-back is still unclear, however, after a recent report claiming that they were hoping to keep Huijsen, so it will be interesting to see how this pans out.
