Lee Trundle comments on Wrexham ‘dream owners’ Rob McElhenney and Ryan Reynolds

Every club has those players who feel like the ‘ones that got away’, those players that pass through but end up becoming stars elsewhere.

Lee Trundle may just be that player for Wrexham fans.

Trundle joined the club from Rhyl back in 2001 having previously turned out for the likes of Burscough, Chorley, Stalybridge and Southport.

The Liverpool-born forward made a big impact, hitting 30 goals in 102 games for Wrexham.

Some will wonder how on earth Trundle was allowed to leave the club but a clause in the move from Rhyl may offer some clues.

Wrexham would have had to pay an extra £20,000 to Rhyl if Trundle signed a new contract and with the club in a mess, Trundle was allowed to go.

Trundle joined Swansea City and became a sensation, smashing 86 goals in 173 games for the club whilst dazzling fans with his showboating skills.

Lee Trundle on Wrexham

Trundle ended up with Chester, which may not have gone down well with some Wrexham fans, but it’s a shame that his best years were away from Wrexham.

Trundle has now spoken about Wrexham having made an appearance on the Under the Cosh podcast.

The former striker was asked about the club having turned out for Wrexham in The Soccer Tournament in the United States last year.

Trundle noted that Rob McElhenney and Ryan Reynolds are ‘dream owners’ for Wrexham fans, praising them for the work they have done at the club.

Trundle also loved playing that seven-a-side tournament last year, even if he was given a surprise upon learning that it wasn’t actually a veterans tournament!

The impact of McElhenney and Reynolds is why Wrexham were invited into the tournament in Trundle’s eyes, but we was left stunned as more than half of the fans in attendance were there for Wrexham.

“I think with what’s going on at Wrexham at the moment and the club, the way it is with them owners, I think for a fan, they’re dream owners to have aren’t they, with what they’ve done at the football club,” said Trundle.

“When they said there was a tour going, I thought it was just a veterans one at first, but when we got there, it was like there was teams from all over the world that had come together.”

“I think Wrexham got invited because of how big they are in America, because we went into the tournament and it was like… we played on the main pitch every single time, because they had to say who they were there supporting on a survey when they bought the tickets. I think, out of 20,000 over the weekend, I think it was like 14,000 said they were supporting Wrexham, so every game we played, the stadium was full,” he added.

Who else played for Wrexham in The Soccer Tournament?

Trundle wasn’t the only former Wrexham man in action with the likes of Mark Carrington, Daniel Jarvis, Dan Jones, Scott Butler, Louis Lloyd, Paul Rutherford, Andy Morrell and even current coach David Jones as well as goalkeeper Mark Howard.

George Boyd and Liam Grimshaw joined the side for the tournament, as did US college players Filip Mirkovic and Nicholas Cavallo.

Wrexham will surely have a team again this summer and there will likely be some notable names in action again – possibly even Trundle.
