'Class': Declan Rice sends four-word message to Newcastle United star on Wednesday

It has been a couple of weeks to remember for Anthony Gordon after the Newcastle United star won his first caps for England – starting against Brazil last week, and coming on against Belgium as a sub.

The 23-year-old has been in stunning form for Newcastle this season – after struggling in his first few months at the club following a £45m move from Everton in January 2023. He’s had a hand in 17 goals.

Scoring 20, he’s laid on seven assists in 40 games for Eddie Howe’s side. His best season, in what has been a frustrating one for the club as a whole. His form though, earned him a call-up to the England side.

Indeed, with Bukayo Saka, Jack Grealish and others missing from Gareth Southgate’s side, Gordon was given a start on the left flank as England hosted Brazil. A 1-0 loss, but he secured his first England cap.

Then against Belgium on Tuesday night, Gordon came on as a sub during the 2-2 draw – with Jude Bellingham scoring a late equaliser for England. His confidence is sky high, as he returns to Newcastle.

The Toon are next in action on Saturday against West Ham, and Howe will be delighted that Gordon was only used as a sub – meaning he will be fresh when Newcastle play host to The Hammers on Saturday.

Gordon returns to Newcastle clearly delighted, and he posted on Instagram on Wednesday following the international break – underlining his joy at wining his first England caps, against Brazil and Belgium.

Newcastle was the best move Gordon could have made in 2023

Chelsea were sniffing, making bids, and Tottenham pushed hard to land Gordon. But he chose Newcastle, where already he is becoming the main man – ahead of the likes of Alex Isak and Bruno Guimarares.

The latter of which, who did not enjoy such a good international break. Gordon has certainly been good this season, even compared to Manchester City and Belgium star Jeremy Doku by pundit Craig Burnley.

Gordon is becoming the player his potential promised we would see. A skilful, fleet-footed winger that is now beginning to have an end product. One that can play anywhere behind the striker – even as a no.10.

Certainly, he is also impressing his England teammates. Arsenal star Declan Rice, who captained England against Belgium, posted a four-word message on Gordon’s Instagram – saying “class all camp bro”.

Liverpool star Curtis Jones also commented, as did former Reds captain Jordan Henderson – who is now skipper at struggling Dutch side Ajax, who are targeting a move for Arsenal assistant Albert Stuivenberg.
