Freiburg coach Christian Streich has said he made the right decision to quit after more than 12 years in charge at the end of the season but has no idea at the moment what he will do then.

Streich announced early last week via the Freiburg website that he was leaving after almost three decades in all at the Bundesliga club.

He said at his first news conference since then on Thursday that "it is almost perfect the way it is" and that he was grateful to be among "very few coaches" who could decide their own fate.

The 58-year-old said it was not yet the time for big emotions because "you are highly motivated now and must try to block everything out" in order to "be fully focussed to deliver good games," starting with Saturday's trip to Borussia Mönchengladbach.

Freiburg are ninth in the Bundesliga with eight matches left and want to return to Europe where they reached the Europa League last 16 this term and last season.

Asked what he would do after the season, Streich said "I have no idea" but that he was looking forward to more peaceful times after "extraordinary great" years which were however also "brutally intense.

"I will have no job in the beginning and no structure. Everything will be different - and this different will be highly exciting," he said.

Streich added that he welcomed the appointment of his former team captain Julian Schuster, who is part of the academy coaching staff, as his successor.

"Now it will be Julian, that's extremely pleasing," he said.
