Police in Germany have removed a double-decker coach involved in a motorway accident that left more than 20 people injured, they said on Friday.

They also reopened the motorway in the direction of Kassel in the state of Hesse.

The coach carrying a group of pupils from a vocational college in the state of North Rhine Westphalia crashed on the way back from a trip to England on Thursday night. The police said it appeared the accident was caused by a medical emergency suffered by the 53-year-old bus driver.

The coach left the motorway and collided with the crash barrier before falling onto its side on the embankment. According to the police, a total of 21 people on board the bus were hurt, one of them seriously, but not life-threatening. All of the injured were taken to neighbouring hospitals.

A large number of firefighters and police officers were on the scene, and an accident investigation team worked until the early hours of Friday morning.
