Bayer Leverkusen sporting director Simon Rolfes was optimistic that Xabi Alonso would stay at the club during the contract talks with the coach.

"The concerns weren't there, otherwise we wouldn't have been so relaxed. My gut feeling always made me optimistic," Rolfes told broadcasters Sky on Saturday.

Alonso announced on Friday that he will stay at the Bundesliga leaders next season, despite interest from his former clubs Bayern Munich, Liverpool and Real Madrid.

Bayern and Liverpool need new coaches in summer after the departure of Thomas Tuchel and Jürgen Klopp, respectively.

Real's Carlo Ancelotti has renewed until 2026, when Alonso's contract in Leverkusen also runs out.

Rolfes said that it was important for the club to have "a clear direction" during the international break so they could concentrate on football.

"The crucial thing is the dialogue with Xabi - and not with anyone else," he said.

Leverkusen welcome Hoffenheim later on Saturday. They top the standings 10 points ahead of second-placed Bayern Munich. They are also in the German Cup semi-finals and in the Europa League quarter-finals.
