'Just a terrible decision': Jeff Stelling weighs in on West Ham controversy

Jeff Stelling has delivered his verdict on the Newcastle vs West Ham United penalty controversy yesterday.

West Ham lost 4-3 to Newcastle in the Premier League after we collapsed in the final 20 minutes of the game, although the penalty controversy involving Kalvin Phillips and Anthony Gordon certainly didn’t help us.

Jeff Stelling was bemused about something that happened in the aftermath of the decision though.

The Hammers fans were gutted at full-time yesterday. We really should have won the game at St James’ Park.

West Ham boss David Moyes put us on the back foot immediately when he brought Phillips on for Michail Antonio in the 68th minute.

The result was a real kick in the teeth for the Hammers, with a top seven finish now looking like it will be incredibly hard work.

Again though, the referee and the VAR officials should be criticised for their awful performances. Newcastle were handed a penalty after 77 minutes that should just never have been awarded.

The West Ham fans tuned in to Match of the Day to see what the pundits made of the decision to award the Toon a spot-kick in the second-half, but we were all left disappointed…

The fact that the Match of the Day pundits didn’t even discuss the second penalty incident at St James Park was laughable.

And Jeff Stelling took to his official X account and criticised the decision from the Match of the Day producers not to discuss the penalty decision:

Stelling is spot on here – the fact that MOTD didn’t even discuss the Newcastle vs West Ham penalty controversy was farcical to say the least.

The talkSPORT pundit has actually made some disparaging remarks towards the Hammers fans over the past few weeks, so it was a welcome change to hear him have our backs this time.

We have been on the wrong end of numerous VAR decisions this season, and it was the same story yesterday on Tyneside.

Hopefully it will even out for us as the campaign goes on.
