'My understanding': Fabrizio Romano shares what he's now hearing about Simone Inzaghi, after Liverpool links

After an international break full of speculation, it was nice to get back to the actual football for Liverpool yesterday.

Since they last played, the Reds had learned that Xabi Alonso definitely would not be their manager next season. With rumours swirling around other candidates, things are far from being clear.

In the meantime, Liverpool have got a title to win. Sunday’s victory over Brighton put them back to the top of the Premier League table and underlined the quality within the squad for a new manager to work with.

But the fact remains that the end of Jurgen Klopp’s tenure is now all too rapidly approaching. Some headway needs to be made soon by Richard Hughes in his search for Jurgen’s successor.

Rumours have suggested that Inter Milan manager Simone Inzaghi could well be one of those Hughes is considering. And as a result, journalist Fabrizio Romano has today weighed in on that speculation.

Will Simone Inzaghi be Liverpool’s new manager

Inzaghi has been doing really well in Italy for a number of years now. But this season, the 47-year-old has taken his team to another level.

Inter are currently 11 points clear at the top of Serie A and look certain to win the Scudetto. After becoming known as something of a cup specialist, Inzaghi has now shown that he can dominate over a league campaign, too.

This has led to some chatter that the former Lazio midfielder could be on Liverpool’s list. However, addressing those rumours for The Daily Briefing today, Romano claimed that he had no information to suggest that this is indeed the case.

“Another name for the Liverpool job coming up in reports is Simone Inzaghi,” explained the reporter. “However, I’m not aware of anything concrete so far on this one, also because Inzaghi is fully focused on Inter and on winning the Serie A title.

“My understanding is also that Inter will offer him new deal in the upcoming weeks, so the situation is currently quiet; let’s see if he will receive concrete proposals.”

Is Simone Inzaghi a candidate for Liverpool

Of all the managers Liverpool are rumoured to be looking at, Inzaghi is perhaps the most experienced.

At 47, the former Italy international is by no means a veteran. But having taken over at Lazio eight years ago this Wednesday, he has already been around for a fair amount of time.

In that period, Inzaghi has been steadily improving. By now he has three Coppa Italia’s to his name, five Supercoppa Italia’s, a Champions League runners-up medal and will soon be able to top it with a Scudetto.

That kind of track record should certainly at least put him in the running for Liverpool. However, with a new contract seemingly on the way at Inter, it doesn’t see like something that could genuinely happen. Perhaps best to focus on other candidates for now.
