'This is his way': What Roberto De Zerbi does in training that Liverpool's players might hate - journalist

A lot is being made of who might be Liverpool’s next manager and Roberto De Zerbi is one of the names in the mix at the moment.

The Brighton boss got a full view of proceedings yesterday as well. His team lost 2-1 in the end but they showed enough about them to suggest De Zerbi might well make it work at Anfield if he got the chance.

De Zerbi is thought to be well-liked by both Michael Edwards and Richard Hughes. He’s among a number of candidates, with Ruben Amorim also being heavily considered by FSG.

Of course, all this comes after Xabi Alonso decided to stay with Bayer Leverkusen.

The Spanish coach has opted to remain in Germany. And while it’s been brushed away a touch, there will be a disappointment inside Anfield.

And when it comes to De Zerbi, journalist Julien Laurens has shared why when it comes to off the pitch, the Liverpool players might not like him at all.

Roberto De Zerbi does something with training that Liverpool players could hate

Of course, we all know that Jurgen Klopp has created a harmony among the Liverpool squad and at the club in general.

Part of that is a structure to things and everyone knowing exactly what is going on at certain times.

However, when it comes to De Zerbi, it seems things aren’t quite as organised.

Speaking to the BBC, European and French football expert Laurens explained that the Italian has a bit of a habit of making last minute changes to things.

“I think Xabi Alonso was the one that ticked the most boxes. Roberto De Zerbi ticks some. But I think they also know that with him there’s a lot of, what’s the word. So for all the structure that you see on the pitch during a game, all that structure in place, off the field it’s very ‘Italian’, let’s put it that way.

“Roberto is an amazing guy and you know, sometimes he can change the time of a training session, literally. So they can be training at lets say 11 and five minutes before he says ‘actually let’s train at 12:30’. This is his way and you either like it or you don’t like it. This is what I find most fascinating. Because he’s so structured on the pitch but off the pitch he’s a little bit all over the place and I’m not sure this is what Liverpool need right now,” Laurens said.

Quite whether Liverpool’s players would adjust to such a strategy, remains to be seen.

Brighton’s players must be happy enough with proceedings. But managing at the very top level with elite clubs and players could be a touch trickier.
