Getafe believe Man Utd have triggered Mason Greenwood contract extension - report

By 90min Staff

Getafe officials believe Manchester United have triggered the 12-month extension clause in the contract of striker Mason Greenwood, a report has revealed.

Greenwood joined Getafe on loan last summer after charges of rape and assault against him were dropped, with United accepting he should continue his career away from Old Trafford for the time being.

A permanent summer exit was widely expected before new United co-owner Sir Jim Ratcliffe left the door open to a reintegration of the 22-year-old earlier this year.

Greenwood's United contract runs until 2025, meaning he could enter the final 12 months of his deal this summer and be available for a cut-price fee, but the Red Devils do have the option to protect his value by triggering their extension clause, and The Athletic have revealed that Getafe feel that has already happened.

Getafe officials have not hidden away from their desire to keep Greenwood beyond this season, either on another loan or permanently, and are said to have left talks with United with the feeling that the player's contract now expires in 2026.

United are reported to have denied making a decision on Greenwood's contract at this point. They have until May 2025 to trigger their option and are under no obligation to publicly confirm whatever decision they make.

Getafe's desire to keep Greenwood has been complicated by his success on the pitch this season. The 22-year-old has eight goals and five assists to his name and has been heavily linked with a number of top sides, including Barcelona and Atletico Madrid.

Financial limitations would see Getafe fail to compete with either side, whose interest has not been confirmed, if they chose to pursue a permanent deal.

As part of the initial loan agreement, Getafe have secured 20% of any future sale of Greenwood. United agreed to the compensation in recognition of the risk Getafe took by signing the striker, both from a sporting perspective and with the controversy the signing inevitably caused.

As it stands, Greenwood will return to United at the end of the season, at which point Ratcliffe and those in charge at Old Trafford will be forced to make a decision on his future.
