German women have no team leadership problem, keeper Frohms says

The German women's national team has no leadership problem in the absence of several key players led by captain Alexandra Popp for the start of Euro 2025 qualifying, goalkeeper Merle Frohms said on Tuesday.

Germany open the campaign on Friday in Austria and then host Iceland next week Tuesday in a Nations League group which also includes Poland.

Popp and defender Marina Hegering are sidelined with injury while vice captain Svenja Huth has ended her international career.

"Of course we are missing these players, no doubt about it. But I don't see a problem that we would have have no team leaders," Frohms said.

Frohms, who is set for her 50th cap against Austria, said she was ready to take responsibility on and off the pitch, and regardless of who is named captain by coach Horst Hrubesch for the upcoming matches.

She added: "First and foremost it's an opportunity for young players to grow into the role and possibly be a bit more present on and off the pitch. We know all the players who are here, many of them have been here before and have been with us for a long time."

Forward Melissa Kössler said that "it has been clearly communicated that we want to win all six matches in the Nations League" and "even more at the Olympics" this summer in Paris.

At the Games, the 2016 gold medallists Germany face four time Olympic champions United States, Australia and Zambia or Morocco in the group stage.
