Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu has been allowed to leave hospital after undergoing an operation under general anaesthetic.

"I am now being discharged from Hadassah Ein Kerem Hospital, which became my office yesterday," Netanyahu said in a video message on Tuesday. A spokeswoman for the hospital confirmed the release of the Israeli head of government.

His office says the 74-year-old underwent surgery on Sunday for a hernia that was discovered during a routine examination on Saturday.

Netanyahu's office did not specify which hernia the prime minister was diagnosed with. The most common hernia is the so-called inguinal hernia. Hernias can involve parts of the intestine, organs or fatty tissue protruding through a gap in the abdominal wall.

Netanyahu has been hospitalized several times in the past, and was fitted with a pacemaker last summer.
