'Hit and miss': Pundit says two Liverpool players have actually got worse throughout the season

Sander Westerveld believes two Liverpool players have gradually become worse as the 2023/24 campaign has gone on.

The comments were made during an interview with Dutch outlet Soccer News.

Liverpool have experienced an eventful 2023/24 campaign so far, with Jurgen Klopp somehow guiding the Reds to the top of the Premier League despite losing Mohamed Salah to the Africa Cup of Nations – and then to injury – while the likes of Alisson and Diogo Jota have also missed large periods.

Some have grown into the Liverpool shirt this season as time goes on – such as Alexis Mac Allister and Jarell Quansah – although Sander Westerveld thinks two players are actually going backwards…

Sander Westerveld says Liverpool duo have got worse

Well, the man who made 103 appearances in between the sticks for Liverpool thinks Ryan Gravenberch and Cody Gakpo have failed to build on a promising start to the season.

Westerveld said: “Gravenberch started very well and everyone was immediately very enthusiastic. After that it got a bit hit and miss. The same actually applies to Gakpo.”

The Dutchman did – however – end on a positive note, stating that he thinks the two Netherlands internationals will go on to have successful careers.

Westerveld added: “If I had to give them a grade, I think I would choose a seven. The future looks good for both.”

Cody Gakpo and Ryan Gravenberch need to nail down a position

In our view, the two Dutchmen are victims of their versatility.

Gakpo has already been used in four different positions so far this season, appearing on the right wing, in the centre of attack and also on the left – the Liverpool No.18 has even played as an attacking midfielder.

In regards to Gravenberch, the man from Amsterdam has shown his ability when driving from deep with the ball, but also when unlocking tight defences in a more advanced role.

However, both Dominik Szoboszlai and Alexis Mac Allister are quite effective at this too, so the Dutchman may need to find something different he can bring to the side.

Whatever happens, both Gakpo and Gravenberch have time on their side at the ages of 24 and 21 respectively.
