Paris opera houses to close for renovation and modernization

The two major opera houses in Paris are expected to close between 2027 and 2030 for extensive renovation and modernization work, according to information provided to dpa.

The historic Opéra Garnier, with around 1,900 seats, is currently undergoing a facade renovation to the tune of around €7 million ($7.6 million). It is expected to close for the 2027-28 season.

The Opéra Bastille with around 2,700 seats is expected to remain closed for the 2029-30 season, the organization told dpa. Alternative performance spaces could be found by then.

The German artistic director Alexander Neef has been at the helm of the Paris national opera since 2020. His term of office was extended until 2032 a few weeks ago.

The 50-year-old took over the renowned music theatre against a backdrop of economic difficulties. Under his leadership, the institution made a profit of €2.3 million in 2023, marking the first time it has turned a profit since 2017.
