Chelsea vs Man Utd: The results of their last 10 meetings

By Jude Summerfield

Two struggling English giants in dire need of long-term direction meet on Thursday night when Chelsea and Manchester United collide at Stamford Bridge.

While both clubs have had extraordinarily unfortunate injury lists throughout the 2023/24 season, the management of bosses Mauricio Pochettino and Erik ten Hag has come in for regular criticism with neither side likely to achieve their goals in the run-in.

The reverse fixture provided chaotic entertainment and their meeting in west London is likely to provide more disorderly but enjoyable scenes. Here's how their clashes in recent memory have panned out.

Man Utd have had to rely on the goals of Scott McTominay a shocking amount in 2023/24 and were once again indebted to the Scottish hot-shot when Chelsea rocked up at Old Trafford in December.

The midfielder's brace came two months after a similar match-winning performance against Brentford, though his strikes were a little less dramatic, arriving in the 19th and 69th minutes either side of Cole Palmer's goal on the stroke of half-time.

United took on 28 shots to Chelsea's 13 but still had to see off late Blues pressure to secure the win, with substitute Armando Broja hitting the post with a header.

The mood was much healthier at Man Utd approaching the end of Ten Hag's first season in charge. The atmosphere turned feverish at Old Trafford in this 4-1 thrashing of Chelsea which ensured a place in the 2023/24 Champions League with a game to spare.

Things were far too easy for the Red Devils as Casemiro opened the scoring while the visitors missed decent openings. Anthony Martial tapped in for 2-0 before Bruno Fernandes hit the woodwork.

The Portugal international wasn't to be denied from the penalty spot as he converted after being brought down by Wesley Fofana, who was at fault for the home side's fourth when he gave the ball away, allowing Marcus Rashford to strike after his first shot squirmed through Kepa Arrizabalaga.

Chelsea haven't beaten Man Utd since 2020 but did at least hold the Red Devils to five draws on the bounce from that year until 2022.

The last tie in that sequence came at Stamford Bridge, where Graham Potter was in charge during his ill-fated spell with the Blues. The former Brighton boss almost oversaw a victory after Jorginho rolled in an 87th-minute penalty, but there was enough added time for Casemiro to loop in a header which Kepa couldn't get enough of a hand to, grabbing the visitors a deserved point.

Two years is a long time in football. That's proved by both Cristiano Ronaldo and Thomas Tuchel still being associated with Man Utd and Chelsea respectively in this April 2022 meeting.

The German's Blues enjoyed a dominant first half but couldn't find a way past an in-form David de Gea until Marcos Alonso bagged on the hour mark with a volley.

Interim manager Ralf Rangnick struggled to get much out of the Red Devils during his stint at Old Trafford but did at least see his side respond quickly as Ronaldo netted his 17th league goal of the season to square things up.

Man Utd were well and truly in the doldrums after Ole Gunnar Solskjaer's sacking, with Michael Carrick taking temporary charge until Rangnick arrived.

Ronaldo was benched and United largely looked to pounce on the break, eventually earning a breakthrough when Jadon Sancho pounced on a Jorginho error to fire in a 50th-minute effort.

The Italian midfielder did make amends from the penalty spot after Aaron Wan-Bissaka felled Thiago Silva and the hosts could have nicked all three points to extend their lead at the top of the table through Antonio Rudiger, but no winner came late on.
