Bayern's Tuchel urges Champions League glory in 'frustrating' season

Bayern Munich coach Thomas Tuchel on Friday urged his players to salvage a "frustrating and unsatisfactory" season by their standard by reaching the Champions League final.

Bayern face a first season without silverware in a dozen years, long eliminated in the German Cup by third division Saarbrücken, and a 12th straight Bundesliga title all but out of reach 13 points behind unbeaten leaders Bayer Leverkusen.

In only real hope is the Champions League where they play English title contenders Arsenal on Tuesday and the week after in the quarter-finals.

If they win, title holders Manchester City or record winners Real Madrid would await them in the semis en route to the Wembley final on June 3.

"There is one goal, to go to Wembley," Tuchel told reporters, and that it was "essential to subordinate everything to achieving this goal.

"There's no reason to hide, there's no reason to mope, there's no reason to complain. You just keep going, keep going, keep going, keep going."

Bayern's Bundesliga hopes effectively ended last week in a 2-0 home defeat against Borussia Dortmund, the latest setback in what he named a "frustrating and unsatisfactory" season.

"I'm really unhappy with myself and how we unfortunately played against Dortmund again. I thought we were over it and wouldn't take the step back," he said.

Tuchel will be leaving in summer but insisted that he "will not let anyone, including myself, off the hook until the end. It's absolutely unacceptable for us to let up even 1%."

Next up is a trip to promoted Heidenheim on Saturday where Tuchel said "we have to make up for last weekend" before turning the focus towards Arsenal.

"Tomorrow, it's a classic case of David v Goliath, in front of a passionate fan base that will get behind the home team," he said.

"We also have a big game coming up after that we're also focused on, but we can't just skip ahead to it."

Bayern will be without goalkeeper Manuel Neuer, forwards Kingsley Coman and Leroy Sané, midfielder Aleksandar Pavlovic and full back Noussair Mazraoui, and Tuchel said it is not clear whether they will be fit again to face Arsenal.

"None of the five is rested for Tuesday. They are not in the squad because they aren't fully fit, so there is also a question mark for Tuesday. There is no tendency, every minute counts," Tuchel said.
