Trailer for serial killer mystery with Kevin Bacon promises one of this year's wildest movie experiences

Scanning through the most anticipated movies of 2024 there are such blockbusters as Deadpool & Wolverine, Joker: Folie A Deux, and The Fall Guy. While these are all films I’m waiting eagerly for, my excitement isn’t quite so high as to meet my anticipation for a lesser-known film called MaXXXine, although now the trailer has arrived the excitement is certainly ramping up for everybody else too—for very good reason.

MaXXXine movie trailer and release date

Audiences have finally been invited for their first trailer glimpse of MaXXXine, an upcoming American serial killer mystery from acclaimed director Ti West.

Mia Goth stars as the titular character, a young woman who emerged as the lone survivor of a gruesome massacre on a farmhouse in which her friends and colleagues were killed. She pursues her aspirations of becoming a movie actress by relocating to Los Angeles.

However, as she navigates the movie industry in the 1980s, she quickly discovers the threat to her life is far from over. A mysterious killer is stalking her around town, but what is the motive, and will she survive to become an icon or be doomed to the status of another casualty?

The film arguably has one of the best star-studded casts of the year, including Kevin Bacon (Footloose), Elizabeth Debicki (The Crown), Lily Collins (Emily In Paris), Giancarlo Esposito (Breaking Bad), and the singer-songwriter Halsey.

Praise has already begun to burst forth just from the strength of the trailer alone, and we can expect to see the movie premiere in theaters on Friday, July 5th 2024. Before then, on the other hand, audiences have some essential work to do…

MaXXXine is third movie in a trilogy

In case you weren’t aware, MaXXXine is actually the third and final installment in a recent movie trilogy.

It began with X, a 2022 horror movie with comedy elements in which Mia plays Maxine (yes, the same character as in MaXXXine), an aspiring adult film star who is going to film an adult movie with her partner and producer Wayne heading the shoot.

They are filming on an elderly couple’s Texas farm, unbeknownst to the couple. When they figure it out, carnage ensues and a body count starts to rack up.

The second movie in the trilogy is actually a prequel to X, starring Mia as the elderly woman living on the farm in her youth, the film serving as a backstory to explain the trail of insanity she sets off in X.

As for MaXXXine, it’s set after the events of X, so the chronological viewing order would be Pearl, X, MaXXXine. Yet, I’d argue the order of release is more satisfying, as Pearl works much better as a movie knowing what became of her life decades later.

Either way, the two preceding films are essential watches before the concluding chapter, and that’s because they’re both absolutely brilliant in their unique ways. We could very well see a perfect trilogy cemented in cinema history this summer.

MaXXXine opens exclusively in theaters on Friday, July 5th 2024.
