‘Not the best’: Pundit claims something Kobbie Mainoo is doing creates real problems for Man United

Thomas Sorensen claims to have spotted an issue with Kobbie Mainoo’s game which is creating ‘problems’ for Manchester United.

Kobbie Mainoo has emerged as the next star to come through the ranks at Manchester United after breaking into Erik ten Hag’s side this season.

The 18-year-old made his full Premier League debut at Goodison Park back in November and hasn’t looked back since.

Off the back of some eye-catching displays for United, Mainoo made his debut for England earlier this month and earned praise following his display against Belgium.

His impressive start to his United career has led to the likes of Micah Richards labelling the youngster a ‘real star’.

But off the back of his stunning goal against Liverpool on Sunday, Thomas Sorensen believes Mainoo still has plenty of work to do, particularly on the defensive side of his game.

Sorensen claims to have spotted issue with Mainoo’s game

Speaking on the Optus Sport Football Podcast, Sorensen claimed Mainoo’s defensive work creates ‘problems’ for United.

“For all the credit that Mainoo is getting, I think defensively he has a lot of work to do,” the former Sunderland goalkeeper said.

“I think his tracking back is not the best, same with Fernandes. It creates problems for them. That’s why they concede so many chances.”

Mainoo’s defensive stats for United this season

While Sorensen makes a great point that Mainoo still has to work on the defensive side of his game, the youngster can’t be faulted for his effort.

We’d have to disagree with his comments on Mainoo and Fernandes not tracking back as both players work hard for the team.

Indeed, according to the statistics site FBref, Mainoo has averaged 15 defensive actions per 90 minutes in the Premier League this term – the sixth-highest of any player in the division.

The youngster has made 34 tackles, 18 blocks and 18 interceptions in 17 league appearances.

While his positioning can leave a lot to be desired at times, Mainoo certainly puts in the required work from a defensive standpoint.
