‘Astonishing’: Andy Townsend says £164,000-a-week player will ‘never’ be good enough to start for Tottenham Hotspur

Ange Postecoglou’s Tottenham Hotspur are aiming to finish fourth in the Premier League this season, and while they are doing well at the moment, they will face a tough task against Mikel Arteta’s Arsenal.

Tottenham Hotspur will take on Arsenal in the North London derby later this month. The Premier League match between Spurs and the Gunners will be held at Tottenham Hotspur Stadium.

Ange Postecoglou’s side are fourth in the Premier League table at the moment. Spurs have picked up 60 points from 31 matches.

Aston Villa, who are now fifth, too are on 60 points, but Unai Emery’s side have played 32 matches.

I think that Tottenham are in a great position to qualify for the UEFA Champions League, but they do have some tough matches coming up.

One of the fixtures that could prove to be a problem for Tottenham is the North London derby against Arsenal.

Looking ahead to the match, former Chelsea player Andy Townsend made it clear which Tottenham forward he does not want Postecoglou to start.

The talkSPORT pundit has said that Timo Werner is not good enough to start for Tottenham on a regular basis and does not see the 28-year-old £164,000-a-week (SalarySport) Germany international making an impact as a starter.

Werner joined Tottenham on loan from RB Leipzig in the January transfer window. The former Chelsea forward has scored two goals and given three assists in 11 Premier League matches for Spurs.

Timo Werner deemed not good enough to start for Tottenham Hotspur

Townsend said about Werner on talkSPORT (7:43 am, April 9, 2024): “I mean, listen, I don’t think he is anywhere near their best team, him. He is a sub, isn’t he? He is 10 minutes – Timo Werner.

“I thought he was an astonishing signing when he arrived, if I am being honest. And I can understand there are certain players you think, ‘Well, he has played Premier League football before, he knows what it is all about, he knows the demands of it’.

“But I would never see Timo Werner going in as a regular starter for Spurs if they want to go where Ange wants to take them.”

Ange Postecoglou using Timo Werner cleverly

We know that Timo Werner did not have the best of times at Chelsea, but Tottenham Hotspur head coach Ange Postecoglou is using the forward smartly.

Werner is not a great finisher, and at Spurs, he is not expected to score goals.

While the 28-year-old has played as a centre-forward on occasions for Tottenham, he has been used mainly out wide.

Werner’s pace and ability to put the opposition’s defence under pressure is useful for Spurs in the final 30 or so minutes of a football match.
