Graham Potter set to follow up Rangers decision with European giant call - reports

There was a brief moment that it looked like former Chelsea manager Graham Potter might be a viable candidate for the Rangers job.

The former Brighton manager was one of the media’s favourite names when it came to Rangers around the time of mounting pressure on Michael Beale.

When that pressure finally told, you’d have been forgiven for pointing towards the former Premier League boss as a solid alternative.

But quick as a flash, Graham Potter’s camp moved to distance themselves from the notion the ex-Ostersunds boss could take over at Ibrox.

Rangers obviously moved on quickly and went to secure the capture of Philippe Clement but since then Graham Potter has still been without a job.

Graham Potter looks set to turn down Ajax

That is also set to continue amid reports that Graham Potter looks set to turn down the opportunity to manage Dutch giants Ajax.

According to Sky Sports, Graham Potter doesn’t believe such a gig is the right one for him in his career as he looks to carefully select his next position following a disastrous stint at Chelsea.

The report claims that should Manchester United part ways with Erik ten Hag in the summer, then the Englishman is expected to be on an Old Trafford shortlist to replace him.

The notion that Potter would prefer a return to the Premier League goes all the way back to those links to Rangers, with the ex-Seagulls boss also turning down Ligue 1 side Lyon around the same time.

Rangers manager success brings Ibrox exit fears

Rangers obviously never sat still and went on to secure the signing of young Belgian manager Philippe Clement.

The former Belgium international has settled in very nicely and has his team in a title fight of epic proportions against Old Firm rivals Celtic.

With the League Cup in the bag and a Hampden Scottish Cup semi-final on the horizon, Big Phil could well lift a treble in his first (partial) season in charge.

It’s something which has drawn the attention of ex-Rangers chairman Dave King, who reckons the Ibrox side might be lucky to keep Clement if he continues in the same vein.

“I really think we have got a platform now and I just hope we are able to keep the manager,” King said.

“If you look at it right now and the international market for managers, I am watching it a lot with the Liverpool situation, and I say ‘Where is the quality of manager?’

“Liverpool are looking for a manager, I think [Manchester] Utd will be looking for a manager, we have got Barcelona looking for a manager, Bayern looking for a manager.

“You look out there and ask ‘Where are these managers?’ I would think that our present manager, particularly given that [Ange] Postecoglou has done so well with Spurs as well, I think we are going to have to work hard to hold onto him because there is a dearth of really good managers out there.”

As Graham Potter mulls over the Ajax job – and continues to dally over a new gig – Philippe Clement is straight back to business on Wednesday night against Dundee.
