Peter Grant on 'important' reason why Celtic are in better title-winning position than Rangers

Celtic are in the thick of a straight shoot-out with Rangers for the Scottish Premiership title that could go down to the wire this season.

The Bhoys have just six league matches left to play and sit a point ahead of their bitter rivals, who have a game in hand.

Nevertheless, Brendan Rodgers’ men can open up a four-point lead at the summit should they topple St Mirren at Parkhead on Saturday afternoon.

Stephen Robinson’s side arrive in Glasgow’s east end with just one victory in their last five fixtures; nevertheless, they have designs on securing continental qualification, signifying we may not have it all our own way on home soil.

Should we claim three points, Rangers would travel to face Ross County in Dingwall on Sunday lunchtime with increased jeopardy attached to the outcome of their next encounter, which isn’t a comfortable position to be in at this point in the campaign.

Regardless, Rodgers and company will only be concerned with matters in their control, knowing that six straight wins in the Scottish Premiership is enough to secure the club a third successive league title.

Peter Grant pinpoints key Celtic title advantage over Rangers

Former Celtic man Peter Grant is adamant his old side now have an advantage in the battle to win the Scottish Premiership, citing points on the board at this stage as a more powerful position to be in than having games in hand.

Granted, how people view the current situation unfolding is entirely subjective; however, the 58-year-old also believes Celtic possess a slight edge due to the final Glasgow Derby of the season taking place at Parkhead.

Grant explained [Go Radio Football Show]: “At this moment in time, I’d rather be in Celtic’s position. I said it a couple of weeks ago when Rangers were at the top of the league.

“When you’re at the top of the league, that’s where you want to stay. If Celtic win on Saturday, it’s four points. It doesn’t matter about the games in hand; you’ve got to win your games, that’s the most important thing, but I would rather be at the top of the league.

“Barry (Ferguson) will tell you, if you’ve got a home game coming up and if you look after the other games, the next one, in isolation, the Celtic vs Rangers match is at Celtic but, but you’d always say ‘I fancy Celtic at Celtic Park’.

“At this moment in time, I’d say Celtic are in pole position, and they are because they’re sitting top of the league.”

Celtic will feel they have an advantage for a number of reasons, not least the number of established first-team players with title-winning experience among the ranks compared to our rivals.

Nevertheless, league titles are won on the pitch, so we will need to wait and see how the rest of the season unfolds.
