Erik ten Hag must hand Man Utd player his first start since November this weekend - opinion

This weekend sees Manchester United take on Bournemouth at the Vitality Stadium, with one man deserving a start.

Erik ten Hag has some big decisions to make this weekend as he brings his Manchester United side down south with revenge on his mind.

This of course is because last time we faced off against Bournemouth, it ended in a 3-0 thrashing at Old Trafford.

This miserable day in December looked at the time like the end for Ten Hag, but four months on and he remains in place.

However, the next few weeks will be absolutely pivotal as to whether he stays in his managerial position or not beyond this season.

So against Bournemouth, something needs to change and that could be in the form of one man getting his first start since another 3-0 thrashing at the hands of Newcastle in November.

Mason Mount needs to start against Bournemouth

For Mason Mount, it’s largely been a nightmare debut campaign in the famous No. 7 shirt for United.

He’s spent months on the sidelines, only playing 34 minutes since November.

But since returning he’s looked like a bright spark and even scored his first goal against Brentford.

In his cameos, he’s been relentless in his pressing and running, which has gone a long way in impressing fans.

But Ten Hag seems to remain unimpressed with his minutes getting fewer in every game since his return with just nine minutes against Chelsea and Liverpool combined.

Against Bournemouth however, his qualities could be perfect for what needs to improve from the loss in December and so we’d love to see him start.

Where should Mount start for Manchester United?

One thing in Mount’s favour is that he is adept at playing in a handful of positions and really, he could probably start in any against Bournemouth.

On the wing or in attacking midfield are possibilities, but deeper, alongside Kobbie Mainoo is where we think he’d be great.

With Ten Hag’s set-up not having a defensive midfielder anyway – as the two pivots end up as 10s through pressing, his running would be a welcome replacement to Casemiro‘s indifference.

With Mount and Mainoo in midfield along with Bruno, United would have three players willing to run and get back.

It seems illogical on paper – but Casemiro isn’t exactly being deployed as a traditional six, so in the role he’s been given, Mount could be so much better.
