Nick Pope has one word for Sean Longstaff after Newcastle vs Tottenham

The good times continue for Newcastle United.

Indeed, Eddie Howe saw his side thrash Tottenham in the Premier League at St James’ Park to renew hope of finishing in the top six.

After such a difficult campaign, that would be a remarkable achievement for the club.

It’s not been easy this season. Clearly, Newcastle players cannot be excused of poor performances just because there has been an injury crisis but it’s worth remembering the extent to which some of Howe’s men are putting their bodies on the line.

Take Sean Longstaff, for example.

The midfielder may not always convince but remains valued by Howe and has confirmed he has played through injury for much of the campaign.

A product of the club’s academy, he clearly loves representing his boyhood club and is prepared to go through the pain barrier in order to so.

That was a fact not lost on teammate, Nick Pope.

After the game, Longstaff took to Instagram to caption a collage of himself in action: “I love representing the city, representing the people that are me”.

That was a reference to a banner displayed by the crowd at St James’.

In response, Pope wrote “Mag” with a love heart.

Longstaff, for all his faults at times, is one of our own.

Sean Longstaff can have a place at Newcastle for years to come

In an ideal world, Newcastle would have been able to field a midfield three of Bruno Guimaraes, Sandro Tonali and Joelinton for most of the season.

Still, that’s not been able to happen for a number of reasons and Longstaff has had to step up.

Just because he doesn’t always convince as a regular starter doesn’t mean the club need to look to sell up.

He’s highly rated by Howe and willing to play through pain to pull on the famous black and white stripes.

As a squad player, Longstaff can be useful for the years to come.
