Martin Keown says player Man City let go in 2021 was actually better than Luis Suarez in the Premier League

Martin Keown has ranked a player Manchester City sold in 2021 above Luis Suarez during his time in the Premier League.

The Uruguayan is remembered fondly for his time at Liverpool, even to this day.

During his time in England, Suarez was one of, if not just the best striker in the league.

In the 2012/2023 season, the now-Inter Miami forward scored 23 goals and registered 10 assists in 33 Premier League starts.

However, it was in the 2013/2014 campaign in which the legendary number nine was at his brilliant best in England.

Suarez scored 31 goals and also provided 17 assists in 33 league starts.

Unfortunately for the prolific marksman, as outstanding as a campaign as he had, Manchester City went on to win the league under Manuel Pellegrini.

Considering City’s history with strikers in recent years has been positive, it would be fair to compare them to Suarez.

Especially when discussing their spells in the Premier League.

Even currently, Erling Haaland can be likened to Luis Suarez, especially having outscored his tally in the 2013/2014 season with 36 goals last season while winning the treble.

Haaland and Suarez are different kinds of strikers but they are both elite goalscorers.

Carlos Tevez was perhaps more similar to Luis Suarez due to being an excellent technician as well as relentless defensively.

Suarez, much like Tevez was a nightmare for defences to play against because he was a master of the dark arts and a fighter.

Despite how remarkable Luis Suarez was in the Premier League, Martin Keown ranked Sergio Aguero [via TNT Sports on TikTok] above him during his time in England.

Keown ranked Suarez in the ‘B’ tier of strikers to have played in English football while placing Aguero in the ‘A’ tier, who Van Dijk recently admitted in April on The Rest Is Football podcast he found very hard to face.

Aguero was a better Premier League striker than the Uruguayan

When judging their overall careers, the former Ajax frontman and the ex-Atletico Madrid striker are hard to split.

Suarez’s spell at Barcelona in particular is the stuff of legends.

But Luis Suarez was only in the Premier League from 2011 to 2014 unlike Sergio Aguero, who spent a decade at Manchester City, which is perhaps why Martin Keown opted for him.

Aguero played a massive role in City’s league title triumphs as well, winning five in the process, unlike Suarez.

Due to Sergio Aguero having the incredible longevity he had in England, it might have been a no-brainer for Martin Keown to rate his career in the Premier League more highly than that of Luis Suarez, who is more of a La Liga legend.
