'I'd be silly': Conor Coady now shares how closely he watches Leeds results after recent Leicester City blip

It was another weekend of slip-ups in the race for automatic promotion between Leeds United, Leicester City and Ipswich Town.

For the second match in a row, all of the division’s top three sides failed to win as fourth-place Southampton, who had previously looked out of it, gained yet more ground.

Leicester kicked off the weekend on Friday with a shock 1-0 defeat at Plymouth Argyle, before Leeds then failed to take advantage with a first home loss of the season to Blackburn Rovers.

Ipswich were held to a second successive home draw by Middlesbrough, with Southampton keeping their hopes alive with a 99th minute winner against Watford.

A matter of weeks ago, it had looked as though 100 points would be required just to finish in the top two, but these recent results suggest that the mid-90 mark will actually be enough.

Coady now shares how closely he watches Leeds results after recent Leicester blip

On the latest episode of the BBC’s Football Daily Podcast, Leicester defender Conor Coady was asked whether the results of others was something he paid close attention to amid their recent blip.

During the international break, Coady insisted that Leicester were just solely focusing on themselves amid Leeds’ incredible run of form that saw them cut the Foxes 17-point gap.

However, it would be fair to say Coady has taken somewhat of a different stance this time around, insisting it is human nature for him to do so, and how it is often the first thing he does after a game.

He said: “Without a doubt and I think that is natural. Chris [Sutton] will probably tell you from playing football, I love football so I look at results all the time.

“I can come in, whether I should or shouldn’t do it, I look at the results, of course I do, seeing how they get on and hoping they’ve lost so you gain a bit of ground or to bridge a gap. 100 per cent it affects you, but over the last week we’ve spoken as a team of the results we have had at Leicester.

“We can’t concentrate on what anyone else is doing, it’s us and that’s it. That’s how you’ve got to be and that’s how we believe we have got to be because when you are in touching distance of what you worked all season for.

“But like I said, 100 per cent being human beings, I’d be silly if I sat here now and said I don’t look at other results.”

How does it stand in Championship promotion race?

Despite being winless in their last three, Ipswich are currently in the driving seat for the top two as they sit first on 89 points. Hull City (A), Coventry City (A) and Huddersfield Town (H) is their run-in.

Leicester sit just one point behind the Tractor Boys on 88 and actually have a game in hand on both Ipswich and Leeds, though that is against Southampton. West Brom (H), Preston North End (A) and Blackburn Rovers (H) is also to come.

After defeat on Saturday, Leeds still remain just a point adrift on 87 and face back-to-back away matches at Middlesbrough and QPR, before hosting Southampton on the final day.

The Saints will be praying they are still in it by then with two games in hand over Ipswich and Leeds. They face PNE (H) tonight, before trips to Cardiff City and Leicester. They then host Stoke City before travelling to Elland Road.
