'If you'd asked us': Sheffield Wednesday ace drops 'massive' relegation claim ahead of Blackburn clash

Will Vaulks has made a ‘massive’ relegation claim ahead of Sheffield Wednesday’s final three games.

Sheffield Wednesday now have 270 minutes to claim their Championship status for next season, with trips to Blackburn and Sunderland approaching, as well as a home clash with West Brom.

The Owls have had many a chances to climb out of the relegation zone already, having dropped points against Stoke City last time out.

Danny Rohl‘s side still sit just one point from safety, but could potentially need two wins from the final three matches to be in with a chance of playing in the second tier next term.

Players will be desperate to avoid the drop, but will also know what it could mean for their futures atHillsborough – though some won’t have a clue, with most of the starting line-up actually out of contract.

Will Vaulks’ ‘massive’ relegation claim

Despite a lot of uncertainty and pressure on Wednesday, Will Vaulks has admitted he is really ‘looking forward’ to their final test.

Speaking to The Yorkshire Post, the midfielder said: “It’s been an unbelievable season for us in so many ways.

“If you’d asked us 20 games ago would you like with three games to go to be in with a chance we’d probably have taken it so we have to look at the positives.

“We know in the last three games we could have taken more points, we should have taken more points, we deserved more points but that’s in the past now. We can’t look back, we have to look forward.

“We have three massive games to finish the season and I believe in us as a team, in the manager, the players we’ve got and the mentality we have. I’m looking forward to it.”

What has cost Sheffield Wednesday this season?

Despite spending pretty much the entire campaign in the relegation zone, it is hard to deny that Sheffield Wednesday have had a rather ‘unbelievable’ season.

The Owls looked destined for the drop only months in under Xisco Munoz, but Danny Rohl has completely transformed them and spirits are so much higher at Hillsborough than they were previously.

Fans appreciate the players’ hard work and there is so much love for Rohl around the city – they will certainly feel that the German coach deserves the reward of staying up at the end of it.

However, Wednesday can have the brilliant mentality and the positive relationships among the squad, but it has been a lack of quality that has seen them drop points recently and they may not be able to do much about that.

The Owls have created some brilliant chances, but they just don’t have those proven goalscorers to finish them off, and it is those players that are often the difference between relegation and staying up.

Birmingham have Jay Stansfield (12 goals), Plymouth have Morgan Whittaker (19 goals), Blackburn have Sammie Szmodics (24 goals). Danny Rohl’s side made the mistake of not bringing someone they could rely on in.
