‘Huge problem’… Jamie Carragher explains what Jurgen Klopp has to change at Liverpool right now

Jamie Carragher has explained what Liverpool need to change immediately in order to turn things around.

This has been a pretty horrendous month for Liverpool so far. Jurgen Klopp’s side arrived into it with so much optimism.

But within the space of a few games, Liverpool’s Premier League title hopes have collapsed, and they face an almost impossible task at Atalanta to continue their quest for the Europa League.

All in all, Liverpool now need a miracle to turn things around in both competitions. Neither is impossible but winning both is now as difficult as it gets.

The frustrating part is that Liverpool only have themselves to blame. It is due to their own errors that the Reds find themselves in this situation.

It is now also up to them to fight their way out and salvage what is left of the rest of the season.

Jamie Carragher on what Jurgen Klopp needs to change at Liverpool

Both defensively and offensively Liverpool simply have to be better. Klopp’s side just hasn’t been ruthless upfront. Meanwhile, defensively, they’ve defended poorly.

Liverpool under Klopp has very rarely been a strong defensive unit. Historically, the Reds have always conceded goals and have been exploited.

That’s simply the nature of Klopp’s gegenpressing game. However, what has counteracted that has been Liverpool’s efficiency in front of goal.

The Reds have always scored more goals than their opponents, even if they conceded one or twice. But now even that is no longer the case.

Speaking on Sky Sports’ Monday Night Football, Jamie Carragher has explained why that needs to change.

“It has to change,” Carragher said.

“I think Liverpool’s xG in this run is about nine and they have scored, which is not great and for it to just finish and go like that right now at the most pivotal of times is a huge problem for them.

“There is still time to fix that and get it back but I think the nature of the players, it will always be a bit like that. But that has to change very quickly if Liverpool are to get back into the title race.”

Why Jurgen Klopp can turn things around at Liverpool

There is cause for optimism. Klopp now has Diogo Jota returning to the side, and he is one of the most efficient finishers, not just at Liverpool but in the Premier League.

If he can get his match sharpness back, he will be a huge boost for Liverpool from now until the end of the season.

He is someone who has already shown this season that he has the ability to score from anywhere and at any time.
