Unai Emery’s Aston Villa future called into doubt as fans fume over top 6 claim

Aston Villa fans and supporters of other clubs have shared their thoughts on the controversial opinion of talkSPORT pundit Andy Goldstein regarding the future of Unai Emery.

It’s been a thrilling season at Aston Villa, with Champions League qualification for the 2024/25 campaign in touching distance with just five games left to play.

After a dreary run of form, the Villans recorded a shock 2-0 victory over Arsenal on Sunday, seeing Unai Emery take six points from his former club this season in what was an impeccable display from the Villans.

The victory caused upset all over North London, seeing Mikel Arteta’s title hopes stumble and Villa leapfrogging Tottenham to return to the top four.

With the chance still there for the Midlands club to earn European silverware this season, it’s been an outstanding campaign at Villa Park for Emery and his adaptable squad however, the Spaniard’s success has now prompted people to question his future.

Fans react to Andy Goldstein’s opinion on Unai Emery’s future

Taking to talkSPORT, presenter Andy Goldstein shared his controversial opinion on Emery’s stance at Aston Villa if different clubs around Europe came knocking.

Goldstein said: “If it’s Barcelona, he’s going. If it’s Real Madrid, he’s going. If it’s Bayern Munich, he’s going. If it’s Man Utd, he’s going. If it’s Manchester City, at the end of the day, he’s going.

“They’re just bigger clubs. The opportunity to have one of them on your CV for my money is a complete no-brainer.”

The presenter’s opinions has caused outrage on social media, with many replying to talkSPORT’s tweet of the video clip with rage at the 50-year-old’s view on Emery’s Villa future.

The views of @ChrisTrotter161 were shared by many on Twitter, with other fans sharing their opinion on Goldstein’s comment.

@TheHolteHub said: “He already has PSG + Arsenal on his CV, so that’s bollocks. You must be kidding yourself if you think United wants him, he wouldn’t touch that place. Managers die there. He has everything and more at Villa, absolute control. Why would he leave?”

@Lea_EFC agreed: “Unbelievable disrespect on Aston Villa.”

One Villa fan, @KeslerSZN called on others to dismiss Goldstein’s claims saying: “Clearly he is just looking for a reaction Emery is in it for the long term I can guarantee that Reason we made such an effort in getting all his staff and buying his club in Spain…”

Their narrative was echoed by @Anonymous9692, who said the presenter was trying to “wind up” Villa fans:

There was a lot to be said about the top six ‘bias’, with Villa fan @dogon22 saying: “These idiots at talkSPORT need to stop trying to push the false narrative that the traditional ‘top 6’ still exists. Emery won’t leave Villa for a very long time so you can quit the agenda.”

A view that was supported by fellow Villa fan Adam Wright:

Unai Emery’s role at Aston Villa is more than just a stepping stone

One can only assume judging by Goldstein’s comments that he is unaware that Emery is not the calibre of manager that requires a boost to his CV at this point in his managerial career.

Having managed the likes of PSG, Arsenal, Sevilla and Valencia, the Spaniard is well-respected for his work in Europe, not forgetting that he has a host of accolades to his name that others in the game do not have.

With four Europa League titles won as a manager, Emery’s stance at Villa stems way beyond the need to impress to lure a contract from a ‘bigger’ club.

As highlighted in the reaction by football fans, the manager’s association with Villa goes deeper than impressing on the pitch, with his connections to NSWE, the wider community and the future at Villa things that he wouldn’t have at other clubs.

Since his arrival, the manager has taken the Villans from 17th place to challenging in the Europa Conference League to pushing for a Champions League finish, all coming in the first 18 months of his time in the Midlands.

It’s very easy to link a manager doing well to a ‘big’ club on the hunt for a figure with his capability and equally very easy to understand the partnership formed between Emery and Villa.
