'If you're a Tottenham fan it gets worse': Garth Crooks shocked by what Spurs have done

Tottenham Hotspur fans haven’t had great few days, it has to be said.

On Saturday, Spurs fell to a dismal 4-0 defeat away at Newcastle United to dent their Premier League top-four hopes.

To make things worse, Tottenham’s top-four rivals Aston Villa beat Arsenal to establish a three-point gap between themselves and Spurs.

Admittedly, Tottenham still have a game in hand on the Villans, and obviously you had the schadenfreude in seeing the Gunners mess up their title chances.

At the same time, not a great few days for Spurs supporters as far as their team is concerned.

And next season, they’ll be hit with a 6 per cent increase in season ticket prices.

Although the news relating to Tottenham’s prices is from a month ago, we’ve recently had the news of the Liverpool season ticket prices going up 2 per cent.

This has led to BBC Sport pundit and Spurs cult hero Garth Crooks discussing both clubs in his latest column.

What has Garth Crooks said about Tottenham season ticket prices?

Crooks wrote: ‘I don’t know how some clubs have got the nerve to charge their fans more in ticket prices when they are in receipt of more money than ever from television revenues.

“Liverpool supporters announced their disapproval by refusing to take their usual flags and banners on to the Kop for the Atalanta game on Thursday night, having heard the news of a 2% increase in ticket prices at Anfield next season.

“Is this the thanks they get for the magnificent way in which they support their team?

“However, if you’re a Tottenham fan it gets worse. Spurs have raised their season ticket prices by a staggering 6% for the 2024-25 season.

“One could argue that Liverpool’s increase might be somewhat justified due to their fans being treated to the occasional trophy, and if that is the case, then it’s hard to fathom precisely what Tottenham’s reason could be.”

It should go without saying really. The fans are the lifeblood of any football club, and really you’ve got to keep them sweet. In theory, anyway.

However, we’re seeing far too often that it’s becoming a case of ‘customers’ rather than ‘supporters’.

Unless fans actually vote with their wallets (boycotting the team, going to watch a non-league alternative in your area perhaps), and en masse, then not much will change.
