Early predicted Leeds United XI to face Middlesbrough: Two changes as Farke makes major attacking decision

A nine-day break between matches might actually be beneficial for Leeds United.

The Whites are not in action until next Monday when they make the trip to Middlesbrough hoping to keep their automatic promotion hopes alive.

Having been almost perfect from the turn of the New Year to the March international break, Leeds have picked up just five points from a possible 15 available since the resumption of the season.

Saturday’s home defeat to Blackburn Rovers was arguably the worst of the entire campaign, though thanks to slip-ups elsewhere, Leeds do still remain in the hunt for the top two.

The extended period of rest ahead of the game at the Riverside should hopefully stand Leeds in good stead, handing them the chance to hit the run-in head on.

So, with that in mind, here is our early predicted XI for the match.

Goalkeeper

Illan Meslier could not do much about Sammie Szmodics’ goal and keeps his place between the sticks.

Defence

Connor Roberts was handed just his second league start for Leeds since joining from Burnley on deadline day, and should keep his place at right-back.

He could only manage just over an hour against Rovers having only just returned from injury, but will hopefully be fit enough to play the full 90 next time out. Welsh teammates Joe Rodon and Ethan Ampadu join him in defence.

Junior Firpo did not enjoy his best game last time out but is likely to keep his place on the left-hand-side of defence.

Midfield

Archie Gray was handed a rare midfield start at the weekend but could not really stamp his authority on the match. He should be replaced by Glen Kamara, who got a rest on Saturday, having recently been suffering with illness.

Ilia Gruev is, of course, the man to partner Kamara just in front of the back four.

Attack

Leeds’ attack has, quite simply, been misfiring in the last five matches and so it is time for Daniel Farke to do something different.

Georginio Rutter has been poor in the number 10 role and should move back up front, with Joel Piroe dropping to the bench in place of Dan James.

James should start on the right, with Crysencio Summerville on the opposite flank and Willy Gnonto as a number 10, who Farke thought was ‘excellent’ on Saturday. He has played there before for Italy.

Predicted XI: Meslier; Roberts, Rodon, Ampadu, Firpo; Gruev, Kamara; James, Gnonto, Summerville; Rutter
