'Very impressed': Mikel Arteta admits he's been amazed by player Arsenal sold this season

Mikel Arteta has admitted he’s been ‘very impressed’ by one player who left Arsenal last summer.

The Gunners boss has been speaking to the media ahead of tonight’s second leg against Bayern Munich in the Champions League.

Arsenal will be hoping to get back to winning ways after a disappointing home defeat to Aston Villa on Sunday.

While Bayern haven’t been at their best this season, they caused Arsenal real problems on the counter at the Emirates Stadium last week.

The first leg ended in a 2-2 draw thanks to a late equaliser from Leandro Trossard and Bayern will fancy their chances at the Allianz Arena this evening.

Of course, Thomas Tuchel‘s side missed out on the Bundesliga crown after Bayer Leverkusen secured their first-ever title over the weekend.

Xabi Alonso’s men remain unbeaten in all competitions this term and former Arsenal man Granit Xhaka has played a key role in their success.

Arteta impressed by Granit Xhaka after Arsenal exit

Speaking to the media on Tuesday evening, Arteta was asked whether he has asked Alonso for tips on how to beat Bayern.

“First of all, big congratulations to Xabi and Granit, because it was a big day for him as well, so I’m happy for them and very impressed with what they’ve done,” the Gunners boss said.

“Yes, I congratulated him because we are good friends and because I’m really happy for him, but that’s a different story. We don’t face this competition regularly, and it’s a Champions League tie, so the game is very different.”

Edu Gaspar’s message to Xhaka

Following Leverkusen’s historic title win, Xhaka took to social media and the former Arsenal man received a message from Edu Gaspar.

The Gunners chief congratulated Xhaka by applauding his achievement beneath the post, while Emiliano Martinez also replied.

Xhaka has enjoyed an exceptional campaign in Germany after leaving Arsenal last summer.

The 32-year-old has racked up 41 appearances in all competitions and will be hoping to help Alonso’s side achieve success in the Europa League after securing the league title.
