Online outrage over alleged Dortmund shirt theft is storm in a teacup

An alleged Julian Brandt shirt theft that caused a storm on the internet after Borussia Dortmund's Champions League win against Atletico Madrid turned out completely harmless on Wednesday.

A video shared on social media showed Brandt aiming to hand his shirt to a disabled person in a wheelchair after Dortmund's 4-2 win for a semi-final berth but it was snapped up by the person next him.

The video was clicked tens of thousands of times and many users vented their anger and outrage about the alleged theft in the comments section, it became an issue in the team dressing room and Dortmund pledged to look into the matter.

But Brandt told Sky TV on Wednesday in a video shared by Dortmund that it has turned out the disabled man and the other person are partners.

"It's actually not that bad, because the wheelchair user contacted us and said, 'that was my girlfriend'. They belonged together. So the shirt is in the right hands and hasn't got away," Brandt said.

"Of course it is a viral issue but we can all calm down again."

The man in the wheelchair told the Bild paper that his partner "only grabbed the shirt because Julian Brandt couldn't get any closer. It was a very nice moment for us.

"I always wanted a shirt after a match. We are real Dortmund fans. I have everything from the club what you can buy. I am really proud."
