'The minimum...': Dejphon Chansiri's prediction for Sheffield Wednesday this season has gone badly wrong

Sheffield Wednesday remain in 23rd place of the Championship table, with just three games of the season remaining.

Danny Rohl in his first game as Sheffield Wednesday manager oversaw a 1-0 defeat at Watford back in October.

That defeat kept the Owls in last place of the Championship table, but then with only three points on the board.

Fast forward to now and Rohl’s Sheffield Wednesday have 44 points on the board, albeit still in the drop zone.

Wednesday now have a fighting chance in the Championship despite going without a win in their first 13 league games of the campaign.

Sheffield Wednesday sell out Blackburn Rovers trip

Up next for the Owls is a trip to Blackburn Rovers on Sunday.

Rovers are slowly pulling themselves to another season in the second tier, with one defeat in their last four leaving them in 17th and now five points above the drop zone.

But on Sunday, Sheffield Wednesday will be backed by 7,000 travelling fans; a feat hailed by midfielder Will Vaulks.

After the Blackburn game, Wednesday host top six hopefuls West Brom in their final game at Hillsborough this season, ending the campaign at Sunderland in May.

As we near the end of the season, what thoughts might be going through owner Dejphon Chansiri‘s head right now is anyone’s guess.

He has a lot on his plate ahead of the summer but there’s no doubting that staying in the Championship would solve a lot of his problems.

Chansiri though was hoping for much more this season.

Despite Sheffield Wednesday only coming up from League One last season, then parting ways with Darren Moore just several weeks before this season started, Chansiri was expecting a top six finish this season.

Speaking to The Star back in June, Chansiri said:

“For me, the minimum should be play-offs. Anyone can lose or win in the play-offs, it’s 50-50. If we don’t try, then what’s the point in staying in the Championship?”

A host of reasons why, but one thing sticks out

There’s an endless list of reasons why Sheffield Wednesday haven’t made the play-offs this seaosn.

One is the lack of investment last summer, the lack of planning for their eventual return to the Championship, and then the Moore fiasco followed by Xisco Munoz’s horror spell in charge.

Also there’s the state of the competition in the race for top six; the likes of West Brom, Norwich City, Hull City, Coventry city and several others battling for promotion all have squads far bigger and better than Wednesday’s.

But Chansiri’s sky high expectations are another big flaw at the club.

Chansiri appears to expect the world from his players and the manager, yet he gives the club very little resources to work with, showing a distinct lack of footballing knowledge.

That’s been a criticism of Chansiri’s for a long time now and the lack of a CEO or a director of football has never seemed so critical for Sheffield Wednesday.

Chansiri, seemingly, still has a huge say in the footballing side of operations at the club when he should really be a silent owner.

And there doesn’t seem to be an end in sight for Sheffield Wednesday fans right now.

But all they and the team can focus on is the next few games, and then deal with whatever the outcome of this campaign is.
