Kyle Busch recognizes he’s grown a ton as a driver and as a man over the course of his NASCAR Cup Series career.

Joining The Pat McAfee Show on Wednesday, Busch took some time to answer a question from co-host A.J. Hawk, where he elaborated on the differences in the way he drives presently, compared to the way he drove when he first joined the Cup Series as a young man.

“Yeah, I would say when you’re young, and you’re coming in, you want to do nothing but light the world on fire. You want to prove to everybody who you are, and that you should be there,” Busch answered. “So I tore up a few things in my earlier days. I crashed a little bit, trying to carry that speed and not being able to harness it and perfect it to the level of what some of these other guys do when you’re jumping into the sport.

“But over time, being able to get better and winning 60 something races and two championships and all of that. Had an amazing career, and a great time of being able to accomplish all of that.”

Alas, it’s evident Busch has found the secret to success in the Cup Series, becoming one of the greatest drivers the sport has ever seen, especially in recent memory. However, he’s struggled a bit in the last couple of seasons, and the No. 8 wheelman believes the adjustment to basically having no practice could be the culprit.

“The last three of four years, I would say, ever since COVID, they’ve really cut out practice,” Busch added. “So when we get to a race track, we go out to a race track, and we have 20 minutes of practice, and we qualify, and then we go right into the race. So in the years prior, before COVID era, it always was like, two or three hours of practice that you would have for any given weekend. So a lot more time to fine-tune the cars, to work on the cars.

“Pretty much now, when you show up to the track, you get in and you get a little bit, and there’s not a whole lot you can adjust on the car with the new rules.”

Regardless, Kyle Busch is still one of the iconic drivers in the sport at the moment, and he’s looking to get back to his winning ways after a solid drive in Texas over the weekend. He won at Talladega last season, and that’s where NASCAR returns on Sunday. Perhaps he’ll be able to get back to victory lane.
